There have always been many myths when it comes to knowing what causes acne. We would like to provide you a list that squashes any or all those myths that have circulated through your mind.
We understand that the mention of acne can be gross to explain as well as to suffer through, but here we have provided a simple breakdown of each breakout:
The Blackhead
Usually caused by oily skin that consists of dead skin cells and bacteria trapped in pores. These end up turning black after they have been exposed to air.
The Red Pimple
We all love to pop our own pimples, but we must understand that the proper procedure to doing so is by a trained aesthetician. Red pimples are a result of black heads that have become inflamed and have spread throughout the skin. These become irritated when they come in contact with dirty hands.
The Whitehead
This is when the pore has become infected and has formed an actual “white head” called sebum. This is not to be confused with puss as puss is clear whereas sebum is white and triggered by the sebaceous gland.
Now that we have established how acne starts, let’s talk about why…
Reason # 1: Our Hormones! This is why your face looks like a pepperoni pizza when you hit the age of adolescence.
Myth Buster: Chocolate and fried foods does NOT cause acne! But just for reference, dark chocolate is a healthier alternative to regular milk chocolate. This goes for fried foods as well… substitute these foods with healthier substitutes like fruits and vegetables.
Reason #2: Stress! When you stress, your body releases hormones, one in particular called cortisol. They signal your sebaceous glands to secrete more oil.
