Why Is Sunscreen So Important?
If the risk of skin cancer isn’t enough to get you to slab on some sunscreen, then maybe this list of other reasons will!
Skin (epidermis) the largest organ of the body and most exposed to the world, is also the most susceptible to damage. Because the skin is the most prone to harm due to external factors (sun, insect bites, burns, cuts, etc), it is important to treat it well. Sure, accidents happen such as scrapes, scratches, and other types of wounds, but what about just going to the pool or beach?
Why Apply
Applying sunscreen takes nothing but a few minutes and can even prevent skin discoloration. Sunscreen also helps protect against brown spots on the face and premature wrinkles. It also guards against the sun’s ultraviolet rays which if the skin is exposed to too much, can cause skin cancer.
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) varies in different numbers… the higher the SPF, the higher the protection the sunscreen provides. However, if not reapplied enough, sunscreen may lose its effectiveness and fail to shield the skin from sunburn.
This is why products that contain more tanner and less protection, have been under fire for not meeting the appropriate FDA requirements for sunray protection. Yes, you may get tan, but ultimately your face will look like a leather handbag!
Rays Of Sunshine
Rays are broken into two kinds when it comes to sun coming in contact with the skin, UVB and UVA.
UVA has a longer wavelength and travels through different paths to damage skin and collagen. This causes most premature wrinkles to form as well as other signs of aging.
UVB is a shorter sunray, but penetrates the skin by causing cancerous changes, and sunburn.
