As many of us frantically try to salvage our youth in our late 20’s and early 30’s, we wonder why we neglected our skin. Practicing a good skin routine in your is vital to healthy skin later in life. So, let’s pass on one of the most important life lessons we can!
15 Rules to Follow:
- Routine is key! Start by developing one and let it evolve with your skin.
- Start your day off with a healthy diet:
- Try an acne fighting diet that is full of vitamins and antioxidants that fight inflammation and help give you a healthy complexion!
- Fatty fish like salmon: rich in omega-3 fatty acids
- Nuts: contains selenium, vitamin E, copper, magnesium, manganese, potassium, calcium, and iron
- Avocados: rich in vitamin E and vitamin C
- Red Grapes: full of antioxidants
- Artichokes: full of antioxidants and vitamin C
- Garlic: full of allicin, which kills off bacteria
- Broccoli: contains vitamins A, B complex, C, E and K
- Thyme- Tip: add to pasta or a grilled cheese sandwich!
- Drink plenty of water
- 8 glasses of water is usually recommended, but if that seems excessive to you, try eating more fruits and veggies like cucumbers or watermelon.
- Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser.
- Moisturize your skin after you wash it—morning and night!
- Sunscreen every day, all year long! Tip: Cut your routine in half by finding a moisturizer that has spf in it!
- Avoid touching your face.
- While no makeup is best, if you must, you must. Just make sure the makeup you pick is for acne prone skin or labeled non-comedogenic, which means non-pore clogging. Tip: Best to try a few before you decide because everyone’s skin is different, but consider Neutrogena, Clinique, Bare Minerals, or Lancôme.
- Never sleep in your makeup! Refer back to rule number 3! Always wash your makeup off before bed. Tip: If you are in a hurry try Neutrogena makeup wipes to quickly remove all makeup.
- Sleep on clean pillowcases.
- Keep your hair off your face.
- Exfoliate twice a week to remove clogged pores and dead skin cells. Tip: Do not over exfoliate or you will cause your skin to overproduce oil to compensate.
- Get at least 8 hours of sleep a night!
- While exfoliating your own skin seems easy, it is best to have a professional give you a facial to help remove more dirt than you can. Tip: Get a facial once a month.
- Practice safe sun and always wear sunblock. Refer back to rule number 5!
- Avoid tanning beds that will damage your delicate skin.
